Music Has The Right To Children - Boards Of Canada (1998)
Ideated from: The Eights. going back ten years each day
I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t know Boards Of Canada weren’t Canadian. They’re Scots. It’s a Manchester Orchestra or Taj Mahal situation.
Regardless, this is a top 90s electronic record, well-known and well-loved by people who aren’t me. This is the first time I’ve listened all the way through it; I totally get the excitement. Too bad I was abusing my hearing with Authechre and Plug in 1998.
The longer stretched out pieces build a bit of a trance effect, but it’s always broken up by the organic-sounding drum grooves and vocal samples to keep it from being monotonous. Nothing sounds too programmed or inorganic. There’s a real human spirit behind the music.
Tracks I Liked
An Eagle In Your Mind - building drum track gets some real emotion and dynamism out of the electronics
Telephasic Workshop - a great build up approaching closer to a trance state than a lot of the record.
