Imaginary Day - Pat Metheny Group (1997)

Ideated from: Fall music, things that make me think of the autumn for one reason or another

There are lots of great Pat Metheny records, but this is one is a cut above in my view.

He manages to create something fairly unique in his already varied catalog, and yet keeps his signature approach to gorgeous harmonics and simple melodies.

As with a lot of his later records, this is more than just a jazz record. The runes on the cover tip it off a bit: He’s developed his own musical language, a very mature one that lets him say exactly what he wants to say.

Tracks I Liked

Imaginary Day - It’s not every day that you hear one of the kings of the amplified acoustic cut loose on a full-bodied overdriven electric guitar sound, so this is kind of a treat in itself.

Into The Dream - Metheny loves playing on odd and exotic instruments. This one is done solo with a 42-string beast called a pikasso guitar. I mean, Look at this freakin thing

A Story Within The Story - great dynamics; the track settles down to almost nothing but then builds back up again several times.
