We Don't Even Live Here - POS (2012)

Ideated from: my best-of-month lists for October over the years. also on the Oct 2012 list: Godspeed You Black Emperor, Andrew Bird

POS is part of a thoroughly underground Minneapolis outfit called Doomtree. If you’ve heard of them it’s likely because of fellow member Dessa, who has made quite a career both in and out of the group.

While they haven’t found massive success, they have made a long string of endlessly inventive oddball hip hop-adjacent music, both as a group and in solo projects (often produced by Doomtree producer Lazerbeak and featuring various bandmates).

There’s a definite punk influence. If you haven’t heard DT member Cecil’s mixtape collab Wugazi, mixing Fugazi and Wu Tang tracks, get after it. POS shares a similar love of hard beats and building payoffs.

This record, in particular, leans into club music and features a lot of synth-y robo-funk along with some incendiary and angry lyrics
