Fate's Right Hand - Rodney Crowell (2003)
Ideated from: I don’t listen to enough modern country, so I’m going to make an effort to put more of it in my diet.
I like old school country a lot more than the stuff that’s been around since the 90s. I suppose it makes sense that a newer record that resonates with me would be tagged as “Neo-traditionalist country.”
Crowell has been around since the 70s as a songwriter, bandleader, and sideman. This record will show you his appeal.
Honest introspection in the lyrics, a thoroughly country sound that sounds modern and polished.
It’s a record that avoids cliche, musically and lyrically. As cliche is one of the hardest for me to get over in country music, this works well for me. There is a lot of honesty and kindness in these songs, and no comments on the temperature of the beer in the back of the pickup truck.
Tracks I Liked
Still Learning How To Fly - A getting on with life sort of anthem
Earthbound - fun, positive, and serious at the same time.
