Future Nostalgia - Dua Lipa (2020)

Ideated from: things I missed and only picked up on when they made somebody else’s best-of-the-year lists.

I don’t give pop music enough of a chance a lot of times. But when you get such a solid slab of smart, snappy songs that are so sonically fascinating, it’s hard not to love.

The title gives away the key to what makes it so great: it’s a seamless combo of hyper-modern production techniques with a heady mix of classic-sounding funk, disco, house, and electro. It’s all wound up tightly, and tweaked with too many clever little sonic details to keep track of without a notebook.

The lyrics are smart and honest, with some real emotional maturity.

A real modern pop Triumph.

Tracks I Liked

Future Nostalgia - any song that name-drops John Lautner is great in my book.

Levitating - Don’t know how you escaped it if you haven’t heard it, but it’s a banger.

Boys Will Be Boys - Too bad this wasn’t a bigger hit. A great message that needs to be said louder.
