Linger Awhile - Samara Joy (2022)
Ideated from: The 65th Grammys just went down. While I’m of the opinion that the Grammys are mostly a self-congratulatory circle-jerk for vertically-integrated media corporations to sell TV ad time, I do often hear about some good records I had missed.
Samara Joy won Best New Artist, and this album won Best Jazz Vocal Album. It beat out the LOTD-featured Salvant album that I liked better, but that’s not a knock on this one.
Joy has a classic sound, both in the instrumentation and the quality of her vocal performance. Her voice is wielded like a trumpet soloist, swooping in and out both inside and across the top of the chords progressions of her band.
