Septet - John Carroll Kirby (2021)

Ideated from: A playlist I uncovered from couple years ago entitled “Weird Shit from albumoftheyear.org scraping”. I do love to go deep-diving into genres and lists of stuff I’ve never heard of on there.

Look, this record isn’t bad. Kirby is a noted session and concert band keyboardist, and he and the band he’s put together play admirably good instrumental music. It’s just kind of hard to actually stand out against the noise of the day. I felt like I didn’t have much to say about it so I cued it up to listen through again. I did that THREE TIMES. Not only did I not find more to say, but each time, Spotify puttered off into related suggestions and I didn’t even notice.

So maybe you dig super chill, melodically simple jazz-like music, and you’ll like this. I’m not here to keep you away. For me, though, I didn’t find any reason to play this over just remaining with the sound of my furnace running next door.
