Cutiemarks (and the things that bind us) - Vylet Pony (2021)

Ideated from: it’s Bring Your Daughter To Blog week. She gave me a list of a whole week’s worth of things she wanted me to listen to.

I often marvel like the “old” i am about how kids can create whole full-band recordings with some basic equipment and software and release it to the world.

Vylet Pony, who goes by several different names including Zelda (“only professionally, please”), has made a lot of music, and it’s pretty high quality.

It’s all themed around the My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic animated show (I say “animated show” instead of “cartoon” to reflect that it’s not just kids stuff, although it bugs the shit out of me when people refer to comics as “graphic novels.” I’m a messy bitch).

I imagine it would have been quite hard for a highly creative fan of My Little Pony to release multiple records in any other era. We live in a wild time.

Tracks I Liked

Bonnie - has kind of a classic rock sound and structure (possibly sampling Cream, but I wasn’t sure).

Lesbian Ponies With Weapons - I admit I typed this in before I actually heard it. One of the finest titles I’ve had the privilege of typing lately. The track itself is pretty good. A cut-up, autotune-heavy vocal that is technically well-executed.

Syndicate - A mean little tune built on a great synth bass line

I Don’t Need To Be Fixed - could easily be a radio hit. A well-constructed pop gem.
