Ed Buys Houses - Sidney Gish (2016)
Ideated from: it’s Bring Your Daughter To Blog week. She gave me a list of a whole week’s worth of things she wanted me to listen to.
A Boston indie rocker who’s truly indie, releasing her stuff on Bandcamp. She has a bunch of funny lyrics that also catch you off guard with their pathos and sincerity bleeding through the irony and self-deprecation.
The obvious touchpoint here is Jonathan Richman, maybe because of the Boston connection. But she’s got a similar easy and likable presence. Even though her voice isn’t the kind to command attention, her performances still do. She’s self-deprecating and open.
Tracks I Liked
Ed Buys Houses - an impressionist poem about the ridiculousness of the alpha male?
Buckets of Fun - a punky bop
Presumably Dead Arm - “My brain’s a toddler rollerskating down a hill” and “I’ll be 30 and happy / likely married to personified business casual khakis”
