Virgins - Tim Hecker (2013)

Ideated from: a favorite album that starts with “V”.

The tagging system I have here kind of fails me when it comes to Tim Hecker. I could put in any number of descriptive tags where he’d be the only artist listed, which doesn’t really do much good.

Some of Hecker’s earlier works were more firmly in the ambient and electronic areas, if always a little more abstract than most.

Starting with this record, he found a new gear. He recorded live musicians improvising under his direction, and then processed those recordings and assembled them into the dense, gorgeously sinister soundscapes you hear.

You may or may not enjoy it as much as I do, but you won’t hear much else like it.

Tracks I Liked

Live Room - i use the word claustrophobic a lot, but it’s pretty apt for this close-cropped, nervous piece.

Virginal II - the tintinabulation of the bells… and the synths?

Amps, Drugs, Harmonium - these are a few of my favorite things
