Scaring The Hoes - JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown (2023)
Ideated from: going through some releases from the last few weeks I’ve been spinning a lot.
Danny Brown is a love-him-or-hate-him kind of performer. He’s got undeniable skills, but has a nasal delivery and an in-your-face attitude that some people might find offputting. JPEGMAFIA emphasizes that trebly quality by mixing and tuning the samples here into an all-out high-end assault. It sounds like you need to turn the high end of your equalizer down, but it also makes for a genuinely interesting sound that you don’t hear often
The production is all done on a hardware sampler. JPEG says “This is what we would sound like in the 90s with no pro tools” although the sampler he’s talking about is the complete-studio-in-a-box Roland SP-404, which ain’t exactly bronze-age tech.
Tracks I Liked
Steppa Pig - chiptune synths and drum samples that sound like a marching band. Pretty brilliant
Fentanyl Tester - chops up “Milkshake” to great results
Run The Jewels - the last 30 seconds is the best thing Outkast ever did. Just sayin.
