Filament - Eighth Blackbird (2015)
Eighth Blackbird are a modern-minded chamber ensemble. It’s not a genre space that gets a lot of notice but there is some great music worth exploring.
The first half of this recording is taken up with Bryce Dessner’s (that Bryce Dessner) collection of romping string-and-piano music, called Murder Ballades.
It’s filled out with pieces by modern avante garde big names Nico Muhly and Ryan Lott (aka Son Lux), as well as the obligatory Philip Glass piece to make sure we all know it’s “modern classical.”
Tracks I Liked
The Dessner suite is solid all the way through. It’s playful and menacing by turns, with lots of great interplay.
