Welcome To Sky Valley - Kyuss (1994)
Full disclosure: Another week on the road, which means lots of listening time but shorter write-ups after I’m back home several days later
Stoner rock is the riff-heavy, jump-up-and-down-in-place rock n roll that’s heavy on atmosphere and fuzz.
While grunge (and stoner rock that got called grunge because it was from Seattle) was getting big, Kyuss and bands like it weren’t able to edge into that space and remained a commercial afterthought.
This is one of several pretty great records Kyuss made in this admittedly limited genre. Teleologically, the band’s biggest contribution to music was to break up and leave Josh Homme looking for something to do so he would be driven to start the similar but much more successful and influential Queens Of The Stone Age.
Tracks I Liked
Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop - Pretty much 70s hard rock, but more rockin’
Demon Cleaner - Sounds a lot like what Homme would do in Queens Of The Stone Age
