I try not to get too exercised over issues of cultural appropriation because I don’t want a world where what color you are determines what music you’re allowed to like, and these conversations often seem to be headed on that vector.

That said, it was a little jarring to listen to a pretty good Afrobeat record and then find out the band was primarily made up of Australian white dudes who met at college. But whatever, I guess. Afrobeat is a fascinating musical culture that doesn’t get a lot of attention, so it’s great that these guys are into it.
