Heroes - David Bowie (1977)
Three months in 1977: Released Oct 14.
Bowie’s “Berlin Trilogy” was Low, this one, and Lodger. Fun fact: this was the only one of the three that was actually recorded in Berlin, right next to the Berlin Wall.
Bowie’s standard band in this era included Brian Eno (no o_O because I gave him his own tag) as a muse and creative partner, kind of the same role Mick Ronson had filled in previous years only with more Euro-nerd energy.
Robert Fripp (fine, I’ve just given him his own tag as well) plays guitar and his signature “elephant talk” screech is all over the place to great effect.
So what are we getting here?
- one of the most iconic photos of the man as the cover art
- the title cut, one of his biggest and most frequently covered songs
- Beauty And The Beast and Joe The Lion, for my money two of his best “deep cuts” type of non-massive hits that people still should listen to
- a side 2 of the record that is a highly eno-informed soundscape of menace and beauty. Maybe not the first time that sort of thing has been half of a pop record, but the first notable time.
It’s a great listen all the way through
