The Pentangle - Pentangle (1968)

The British folk rock scene in the late 60s was an amazing hodge-podge of creativity and approaches. Pentangle was an excellent example: folk song structures, but informed by blues, jazz, and rock in the best sorts of ways.

The musicianship is excellent. The band might have still been sorting out how to blend together (this is the first studio recording they made), but if they’re being a bit timid it’s only because they’re giving their bandmates room to work.

Tracks I Liked

Bells - check out the acoustic Metallica-twenty-years-early intro that also manages to sound a bit like Yes’ Roundabout a couple of years early

Pentangling - turns into a great little guitar boogie in the extended second part

Way Behind The Sun - blues shuffle, one of the best tracks

Friend And Foe
Menomena
a tight kind of loose
