Book Of Days - Meredith Monk (1990)

Monk is an interdisciplinary performance artist. Her trademark musically is to overdub, delay, and stack her vocals on top of each other, which is itself a pretty innovative thing considering how long she’s been doing it. But she also adds dance, film, and other visual elements to make each of her projects an experience beyond just music.

Obviously this doesn’t lend itself well to putting Spotify on in the morning. This particular work is the soundtrack to a film she also directed about life in the Middle Ages.

The music here does have a medieval feel to it but is also very modern in other ways.

It’s a gorgeous piece of work, even when it’s a bit unsettling.
