Frances The Mute - The Mars Volta (2005)
Mars Volta is the revamped version of hardcore masters At The Drive-In (O_o), tacking into much more adventurous modern prog waters.
This is their second album, I believe, and the first to truly hit the band’s stride. Most of the tracks run between 12 and 30 minutes, and are marked out as multi-part suites (my own personal brand of catnip).
The band stakes out a lot of space to work. It never feels meandering. The lengthy endings and transitions do tend to winnow into sound collage and noise, but you’re never very far away from another whiplash turnaround.
