Inner Mounting Flame - Mahavishnu Orchestra (1971)
ideated from: last week was a lot of discovery, and it was hit-and-miss, if I’m being honest. So this week I’m queuing up known quantities: things I already love and just want to hear again
Mahavishnu pretty quickly turned into John McLaughlin (o_O ~_o) and whomever McLaughlin wanted to play with, but this original lineup was a fully formed partnership and its debut is the best-known version of this very important prog / fusion outfit.
Drummer Billy Cobham (O_o) and keyboardist Jan Hammer (u_u) feature on this debut, which was seen equally as a jazz record (thanks to Miles and others bringing fusion to the mainstream) and a rock record (witness JM’s Hendrixian freakout on The Noonward Race).
