My Goal's Beyond - John McLaughlin (1971)

McLaughlin made a name for himself with Miles Davis and then with his own band, Mahavishnu Orchestra. Both of those were primarily with his screaming, skronking electric guitar sound. Here he switches to acoustic but without letting up on the intensity all that much.

Peace One and Peace Two explore McLaughlin’s fascination with Indian music along with drummer and frequent collaborator Billy Cobham. The rest of the record is Jazz standards done solo acoustic with just a handful of embellishments. Both halves are amazing and really show off the man’s chops in a toned down and more intimate setting.
