Tomorrow - William Onyeabor (1979)
Onyeabor is an interesting character because he pretty much successfully erased himself from the music world.
An independently wealthy industrialist, he self-released a series of records in the 70s and early 80s. Then–for reasons nobody knows for sure–he left the music business, turned to his other business interests, and made a point of never talking about his years as a musician.
By the time he died in 2017, even his western-world label Luaka Bop didn’t have a lot to offer on his biography.
All the enigma aside, this is great Afrian funk. It’s vaguely psychedelic and definitely good-times-oriented, even when the lyrical content is serious.
