Fair And Square - John Prine (2005)

Prine was around a long time. This one is almost old enough to buy lotto tickets, but it still came in the 4th decade of his recording career.

Heavy on ballads and slower material, there’s a lot of reflection on the human condition. Prine was always a keen observer of people, and he gets inside a lot of different characters in these songs. The music is traditional, but it’s all well-played and classy.

Tracks I Liked

Taking A Walk - honestly, i thought this was a gorgeous, elegant cover of Lay Lady Lay until he started singing different lyrics.

Some Humans Ain’t Human - a biting critique of mean people that cuts to the core.

Bear Creek Blues - a rockin take on a Carter Family tune, in contrast to a lot of slower material

Let It Come Down
Spiritualized
spacey and gaudy pop experimentalism
