Dead Bees On A Cake - David Sylvian (1999)

Sylvian (o_O, O_o) pieced this together from multiple recording sessions that didn’t quite give him what he wanted.

It features appearances from two very different guitarists, Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot, as well as original co-producer Ryuichi Sakamoto.

The music dips in and out of bouncy, poppy, complex, and slightly dissonant. I’m not a Sylvian expert but I would say this is his strongest collection of songs.

Tracks I Liked

Midnight Sun - a half-bluesy, half-loungey railroad chug

God Man - as menacing as you can make a song with a vibrophone solo

Pollen Path - might be a really roundabout pun on “polymath”? Don’t know but it’s a fun frankenstein’s monster of a tune.
