Venice - Fennesz (2004)
Christian Fennesz (o_o) processes his guitar and other sounds through some heavy layers of effects and treatments. While the effect is often fuzzy and dissonant, he ends up making magic by organizing the storm into slowly unfolding ambient pieces that linger with you long after you’re done listening.
This is the record of his I know the best. I find it soothing and comforting despite the rough edges.
While the bulk of the album stays in its hazy ocean of treated distortion, there are a handful of counterpoints to add some texture. Laguna features a coherent and beautiful clean guitar line on top of the signature sound. Transit also breaks the flow with a vocal by David Sylvian that still fits the aesthetic perfectly.
