Filha De Mil Mulheres - Clau Aniz (2018)

Ideated from: things I missed and only picked up on when they made somebody else’s best-of-the-year lists.

Tbh I don’t know where this came from on my lists, because I can’t find much about this Brazilian artist that isn’t itself in Portugese. (I only “read” Portugese to the extent that there are a lot of Spanish and Latin cognates, with liberal help from Google, so I don’t suppose I read much about it).

But while I don’t have much background on this, I definitely enjoyed it. Nearly all the tracks are slow in their approach, building beautiful little soundscapes with Aniz’s heartfelt vocals topping them off.

There’s some post rock style build-and-release, and some of the longer pieces veer off into more ambient and trance territory. The instrumentation stays mostly organic throughout, which makes for some interesting texture.

Tracks I Liked

Quero te guardar… - lots of percussion, and some great dynamics

Romana - would be at home on a cavernous, cinematic post-rock record. Expansive and yet focused and personal. A real standout track.

Voyage Roset - A great change of pace into more synth-driven, cosmic territory

Planetary Clairvoyance
Tomb Mold
bottomlessly filthy blackened death metal

Familiaris
Snooze
fun, if inconsequential, math prog
